Space Technologies in Response to Disaster: From Detection to Recovery

Space telecommunication, earth observation and navigation are used to detect, respond and foster the recovery of disasters. The European Space Agency aims to accelerate the use of space in response to increasing natural, space and human-made disasters. Directly addressing disaster management actor’s needs, the combination of ground and space technologies in the next years could be a game changer.

About Anna Hirsch-Holland

Anna Hirsch-Holland is coordinating ESA’s flagship Rapid and Resilient Crisis Response Accelerator, an initiative aimed at speeding up and widening the adoption of space solutions in crisis and disaster management. Anna worked for more than 10 years in the humanitarian and disater management sector, including for the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, British Red Cross, and the Norwegian Refugee Council; she has been deployed globally to Turkey, Lebanon, and Afghanistan among others. Anna has particular expertise in complex emergencies, protracted crises, forced displacement, and humanitarian coordination. In recent years, Anna has specialised in cross-sector partnerships for sustainable development, advising private and public funders on how they can foster collaboration across public, private, and civil society entities.
