Rescue Animals in Disasters: An Urgent and Timely Need

Disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity around the world. They cause a lot of financial and human damage. But what about animals? Every year, billions of them suffer the destructive consequences of these events. However, these silent collateral victims remain forgotten by crisis management policies, thus raising economic, health, security, environmental and societal challenges. IFAW calls for a change.

About Céline Sissler-Bienvenu

Céline Sissler-Bienvenu has been the first European to graduate from the Paramilitary School for Wildlife Specialists in Garoua, Cameroon. She learnt first-hand how to manage a protected area and stop destructive practices such as poaching. Entered at IFAW in 2006, she developed grassroots training for rangers working in Central Africa, or organized animals’ translocations to reduce human-animal conflict in Western Africa. Since 2021, as Programme Director for IFAW’s Disaster Response work in Europe, together with her team, Céline advocates for the improvement of disaster response policies at the EU and national levels. As droughts, wildfires, floods hit Europe more frequently and furiously than ever before, it’s important that animals are incorporated into national disaster management planning. Her field experience in wildlife rescue and animal welfare expertise enable her to respond and provide relief to animals in crisis.
