Reducing Risks at the Core to Address the Insurance Protection Gap In Europe

There is a substantial insurance protection gap for natural catastrophes in Europe which is expected to become even wider given the current climate projections. Prevention and adaption measures can reduce the risks and insured losses. Therefore, they are a key tool to maintain the availability and affordability of non-life insurance products providing coverage against natural catastrophes. Ultimately, adaptation measures help to reduce the insurance protection gap in Europe.

About Marie Scholer

Dr. Marie Scholer Mendez has joined EIOPA in April 2019 as a Senior Expert on Policy Sustainable Finance. In this function, she leads the catastrophe risk expert network and further develops EIOPA's work on sustainable finance.
Prior to EIOPA, Ms Scholer worked for the reinsurance sector at R+V Re in Germany as a Risk controlling Actuary and for the insurance sector at Zurich insurance in Switzerland as a Senior Catastrophe Modeller. She has extensive knowledge in natural catastrophe models as she worked for a catastrophe model vendors (RMS) and holds a PhD in geophysics.
