Building Resilience to Natural and Man-generated EMP

A brief review of naturally occurring and man-generated EMPs will be given with an emphasis on the high-altitude nuclear blast EMP – a (not so) low-probability event with a global impact event. Hazardous effects and coupling pathways to critical infrastructure will be described, followed by design and implementation of EMP protective measures and devices to build a resilient Electrical Grid and interdependent critical infrastructure segments.

About Plamen Doynov, PhD

Dr. Plamen Doynov is the CTO of EMP Shield, Inc. After many years of applied engineering in chem-, bio-, nuclear, and explosives defense programs, Plamen worked on a counter UAV program for the US NAVY to develop Directed energy high-power EM sources. After joining EMP Shield, Plamen’s work is focused on understanding the coupling mechanisms of EMP energy to electrical and electronic components and systems and optimizing the implementation of protective measures to build resilience to critical infrastructure segments. Doynov is the author and co-author of multiple publications and patents.

Dr. Doynov has multiple professional certifications. He serves on multiple national committees and working groups related to the technology and strategy development for protection of critical infrastructure from the impact of EMP. Examples include participation in the Domestic EM Spectrum Operations Steering Committee, the Working Group for National Resilient Power Guidelines for Critical Infrastructure and Communication, and the National Security Collaboration Centre, Joint Base San Antonio Texas Electrical Grid Pilot Program.

Dr. Doynov is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Directed Energy Professional Society, and the Program Management Institute.
